Lifestyle

It's no surprise that Wellington Point itself is known year-round as a great spot for the family for fishing, boating, barbecues and a wide range of water sports. Picturesque Wellington Point Reserve is a fantastic place to watch the lights brighten over Brisbane as daylight fades, to picnic, enjoy the sun or just relax with a good book in the shade of the huge Moreton Bay figs. A trip to "Wello" is not complete without a walk at low tide across the sand bar to King Island.

Wellington Point Village’s dining precinct is highly regarded, with many cafes and restaurants to satisfy all tastes.

Shopping

Wellington Point Village can provide just about everything you need. Just up the road, Birkdale Gardens and Birkdale Fair shopping centres offer a wider variety, with the larger business and shopping precinct at Capalaba.

Schools and colleges

Wellington Point State School and Wellington Point State High School serve this area, which is also home to Redlands College, a co-educational independent school.

Getting around

Wellington Point railway station provides access to regular Citytrain services to Brisbane and Cleveland. Transdev Queensland operates regular bus services, with a 24-hour weekend bus from Brisbane to Victoria Point.

History

The first European settlers began arriving in Wellington Point in the mid-1860s. Many were interested in growing sugarcane but this was slowly replaced by fruit and vegetable farming when cane proved unsuitable. Other settlers arrived to cut timber which was often rafted down creeks to saw mills around the coastline. Fishing and oystering were other occupations in the area.

In the mid-1880s, the railway line was built from Brisbane to Cleveland, passing through Wellington Point and making the area popular as a seaside destination. Many of the oldest houses on the end of Wellington Point were holiday houses or weekenders built by people who lived in Brisbane. The Wellington Point Reserve was also a popular camping ground from the 1890s until it closed in 1974. Some families came every year for their summer holiday. The reserve had a swimming enclosure, a slide, a jetty and a kiosk.
